Ausiello: May’s series finale is going to be a real downer, predicts Michael Emerson. “I don’t think Lost will have a happy ending,” he confessed to us at the Saturn Awards. “It’s the end and I think we are going to start seeing more casualties. I would put money on major characters being killed. I believe it will be a sad ending to the show — or at least bittersweet. I think it will definitely be a series finale for grownups.” Emerson, meanwhile, is still trying to make sense of the season 5 finale. (Join the club!) “I killed Jacob… maybe… probably,” he hedged. “It isn’t like we haven’t seen plenty of other people be killed and somehow come back. And what does it mean if I did kill him? I Who the hell was he anyway? Obviously, Ben wanted a father. So much of our show is about bad fathers. It is one of our biggest themes. And Jacob disappointed in those final moments. And maybe Jacob made it easy for him. Maybe that was all meant to happen. Is it all ordained? Maybe. And for that matter, can Jacob even be killed? Stay tuned is my response.”

While Ben Linus is known and remembered for many things on Lost, one fact about him is often overlooked:

In the love triangle that sprung up around Jack, Sawyer and Juliet, it’s easy to forget that Ben once crushed hard on this fellow Other.

So, in the wake of her apparent death, how will the ultimate manipulator react?

“Ben’s no longer in a position to entertain romantic notions,” Emerson told E! News when asked that question. “I don’t think there’s room for romance in Ben’s world right now. As much as he admires her on a lot of levels, I don’t think he can do anything about it.”

That’s all the actor could offer. After all, he recently admitted that the cast doesn’t have knowledge of any actual Lost spoilers.

While everything may look set for The Vampire Diaries’ premiere in the fall, one of its stars may need to head over from Mystic Falls to Hawaii to revisit an old show.

Ian Somerhalder, who plays evil vampire brother Damon Salvatore on the upcoming CW series, tells TV Guide that there’s a “large or decent” chance that he’ll be back on the ABC series Lost for its final season. He starred on the hit sci-fi series’ debut season as Boone Carlyle, stepbrother of Maggie Grace’s Shannon Rutherford, who is also rumored to be making a return.

Somerhalder’s character was killed off in the first season, while Grace’s died in the second.

After Emilie de Ravin’s Claire, Grace hinted that she’s “looking forward to visiting Hawaii soon,” and since her character and the new vampire’s are very much intertwined, it’s not a farfetched possibility.

“I don’t know why…” As for directly acknowledging Lost, Grace simply stated, “I think that they are brilliant writers. If they found the right reason, then I’m sure I would be on.”

A conflict may arise, however, since The Vampire Diaries comes from Warner Bros, while Lost is from ABC Studios. Some say it would take a lot of cooperation between the two network to seal the deal. For the new show, though, an appearance by Somerhalder may very well build the buzz that Vampire Diaries needs.

For her part, a source reveals that Grace “still has affection for the show,” and would love to be part of it one last time, before it finally signs off in May 2010. “I think that they are brilliant writers,” Grace added. “If they found the right reason, then I’m sure I would be on.”

You want Lost spoilers? Don’t ask Michael Emerson for them!

“I know exactly as much as you do at this point,” the actor, who plays Benjamin Linus, told Access Hollywood last week. “Honestly, and I won’t know another thing about it until two days before the cameras roll and they give me a script. And I’m sure it will make my hair stand on ends when I see it.”

Okay. But what about the conclusion of season five? As Ben went being the ultimate manipulator to actually being taken advantage of by the phony John Locke?

It was a change Emerson didn’t see coming.

“It was kind of cool and it crept up on me. Suddenly, I found that I was a sad little follower, powerless and without resources. It was unusual. But you have to think, with Benjamin, the wheels are turning nonetheless and he is looking for a break. And the breaks will come to he who waits.”

When “Lost” returns in 2010, some things will come rather blurry for fans at first. Matthew Fox, who plays Jack in the series, revealed that not only will it have a shocking value, but the season 6 premiere will also be quite confusing. “It’s very surprising and probably fairly confusing initially to the audience,” the actor warned.

“Like a third of the way in (to the season) I would guess we are going to (settle) in one time frame and it will be very linear-no more flashbacks, nothing,” Fox explained further to E! Online. “It will be on the island and sort of a final conflict to the end.”

The 6th season which has been reserved for midseason 2010, will be the final season where answers are given and mysteries are solved. For all of the skeptic fans out there, Fox assured them that the tangled storyline in the first 5 seasons will all come to a conclusion which is “incredibly powerful, very sad and beautiful”.

“I think it is going to be very satisfying and cathartic and redemptive and beautiful,” Fox continued. “I’ve talked to Damon (Lindelof) pretty extensively and every time I talk to him it’s sort of surprising how moving it is just to talk about it.”

At the 49th Annual Monte Carlo Television Festival, Matthew Fox opened up about season six of Lost. The man that plays Jack Shepherd didn’t reveal any major secrets to E! News, but he did make it clear that viewers won’t be disappointed.

Here are a few excerpts from his interview:

On the series finale: [It will] incredibly powerful, very sad and beautiful… I think is going to be pretty awesome.

On the Smoke Monster: I think it is going to be very satisfying and cathartic and redemptive and beautiful. I’ve talked to Damon pretty extensively and every time I talk to him it’s sort of surprising how moving it is just to talk about it.

The sixth season will kick off with an examination of what happened after Juliet apparently detonated the hydrogen bomb: “It’s very surprising and probably fairly confusing initially to the audience,” Fox said.

Confusion on Lost? Now we’ve heard everything!

In closing, Fox explained the linear progression of the show’s final season:

“Like a third of the way in [to the season] I would guess we are going to [settle] in one time frame and it will be very linear - no more flashbacks, nothing. It will be on the island and sort of a final conflict to the end.”

While it’s no surprise that Emilie de Ravin will be reprising her role as Claire on season six on Lost, Ausiello did just break the news that de Ravin will be a series regular during the sixth and final season! Series creator, Carlton Cuse says “Damon and I are very excited to bring Claire back to the show and even more excited for people to experience just how she will return.”

Ooh, so just how will she return? EW’s resident Lost expert, Doc Jensen guesses:

“Any scenario that brings Claire back to Lost must address the mysterious circumstances of her disappearance at the end of season 4, in which many of us were led to believe that she was as dead — or rather, undead — as the Ghost Christian that’s been haunting The Island since season 1. So here’s one thought: Juliet changed time in the season finale by detonating Jughead, and season 6 will tell the story of the new timeline, one in which Claire is alive.”

Jensen continues with another theory:

“In light of the revelation that John Locke was actually a supernatural impostor for half of season 5, perhaps in season 6, we’ll get a storyline in which Claire just emerges out of the jungle, with no memory of what happened to her — just like season 1 — and we and the castaways will be left to wonder: Is this the real Claire or another impostor infiltrating them a la Locke? Heck, maybe that’s going to be the major idea of next season: Who’s really alive and who’s really (un)dead? It really will be the fabled zombie season of Lost.”

Kate Austen gets the spotlight treatment in “Tabula Rasa,” but storylines are advanced for Sawyer, Michael & Walt, and others. It’s a quintessential Season 1 episode, touching on every main character’s emotional arc.

  • While sewing up Marshall Edward Mars’ incision after surgery, Jack discovers a copied picture of Kate’s police mugshot in Mars’ jacket. He knows now that she’s the criminal. Hurley later finds this paper, so he knows too. Hurley tries repeatedly to get Jack to ask Kate about what she’d done that was against the law, but Jack is insistent that it’s none of their business.
  • The group with the transceiver returning from the mountain camps in a clearing for the night, in order to avoid the monster in the jungle. They discuss the transmission from the French woman that they overheard, but Sayid convinces them not to share that information with any of the other survivors, in order to not take away their hope. The next morning, Sayid announces this lie to the entire group of survivors. Kate takes Jack aside and tells him the truth about the French woman’s distress call.
  • Boone steals Sawyer’s gun in the night, he says in order to properly stand guard while the group with the transceiver is returning to the beach. The others refuse to allow it, insisting that Kate should hold onto the gun instead.
  • While salvaging the wrecked plane for medical supplies, Jack encounters Sawyer, who’s started hoarding supplies from the dead passengers’ luggage. Sawyer tries to convince Jack not to use the medicine he’s scavenging on Mars, who Sawyer says is dying, because it would be a waste.
  • Charlie strikes up a friendship with Claire. He also attempts to become friends with Locke, which doesn’t go as smoothly.
  • The island suffers from another sudden rainstorm.
  • Kate checks on Mars, and her presence rouses him into suddenly choking her. Jack finds them and breaks it up. Jack tells her that Mars has three or four days of suffering ahead of him before he dies, and Kate tries to convince him to put the man out of his misery, but Jack refuses, telling her he saw her mugshot, and unlike her, he’s not a murderer.
  • Walt tells his dad that Locke told him a secret: a miracle happened to him. Michael is dubious of Locke and warns Walt to stay away from him. He reiterates his promise to find Vincent for Walt. Later, while searching the jungle for the dog, Michael hears a large, angry animal start to chase him, so he runs. Without realizing it until it’s too late, he runs right into Sun, who’s bathing alone, and topless. He makes a hasty, awkward exit.
  • Mars’ cries of anguish fill the beach camp that evening, causing everyone distress. Sawyer approaches Kate while she’s alone and tries convincing her to give him the gun back so the Marshall can be put out of his misery.
  • Marshall Mars warns Jack not to trust Kate, then demands to talk to her alone. He asks her what the favor was that she was about to request of him right before the crash. She says she wanted Mars to make sure that the man who turned her in got his reward. He asks her if he’s going to die, and she says yes, so he asks her to end it. Instead, she gives the gun to Sawyer, who does it instead. But Sawyer’s shot misses Mars’ heart and perforates his lung, which will hasten his death, but not by much, and only increase his suffering. Jack is furious, Sawyer is emotional, but as Sawyer is commiserating alone, the Marshall’s cries suddenly stop, and Jack emerges from his tent, alone.
  • Locke crafts a whistle out of wood and blows into it in the direction of the jungle. Vincent hears the dog whistle’s call and comes running. Locke tethers the dog there to a tree and finds Michael to let him take the credit. Michael is stunned at Locke’s kindness, but appreciatively accepts the offer.
  • Alone on the beach, Kate offers to tell Jack the whole story about her past as a criminal. But Jack says he doesn’t want to know, that it doesn’t matter here on this island. Everyone gets a blank slate now, a fresh start.

News that should surprise no one: ABC is expected to announce tomorrow that it has picked up a reboot of the camptastic ’80s thriller V and that Lost heroine Elizabeth Mitchell is a full-time castmember.

Translation: She will not be returning to Lost as a series regular.

However, before you go declaring Juliet DOA from last week’s detonated hydrogen bomb, I should point out that this piece of scoop comes with a big but attached: Mitchell’s Lost days are not done. Multiple sources confirm that the actress is expected to appear in an unspecified number of episodes next season, so it’s entirely possible Juliet survived Jughead and her absence will be explained in another way. (Check out Doc Jensen’s column this Wednesday for a comprehensive Juliet theorypalooza.)
